ABOUT THE CURRENT RECIPIENT

The Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA), a community of the Auto Care Association, presented its 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award to Rusty Bishop, AAP, Chief Executive Officer, Federated Auto Parts Distributors, Inc. The award was presented by Bishop’s son, JR Bishop, director, marketing events and motorsports, Federated Auto Parts Distributors, Inc. The award ceremony took place on Nov. 3 at AWDA’s 2019 Annual Conference in Las Vegas, Nev.

AWDA’s Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes individuals who have, over the course of many years, distinguished themselves through their unselfish commitment to, and high level of performance within, the motor vehicle aftermarket industry. The award is named in honor of former AWDA President, Martin Fromm.

Rusty Bishop began his career in the automotive aftermarket a half century ago with Fisher Auto Parts in Staunton, Va. During his time at Fisher, Bishop worked in warehouse and jobber store management and served as a director of the company. In 1985, he co-founded Federated Auto Parts Distributors, which has grown to become one of the nation’s largest automotive parts distribution networks. Bishop holds the position of CEO with Federated, which is also headquartered in Staunton, Va.

“Many years ago, we lost Art Fisher, one of the founders of Federated,” said Tim Trudnowski, President, Automotive Jobbers Supply. “I think in the group there was a little apprehension about what was going to happen, but you look back now and see that we didn't have a thing to worry about. Rusty took the reins and just kept on going.”

Bishop’s service to the aftermarket industry includes: Automotive Service Industry Association (ASIA) Board of Directors of 1991-1993; Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA) Board of Governors 2000-2003 and again in 2005-2011. In 2006, Bishop entered the AWDA Chairs and served as chairman in 2009. He is widely credited with revitalizing AWDA’s Annual Business and Education Conference during his tenure.

Bishop chaired the University of the Aftermarket Foundation from 2010-2014 and again in 2017. During his chairmanship he spearheaded an effort that dramatically increased donations, grants and scholarships. John Washbish, CEO, Aftermarket Auto Part Alliance, agreed. “The foundation would not be where it is today without the excellent leadership Rusty provided,” said Washbish. “He wasn't doing it for his group or for himself. He did it for the benefit of the entire aftermarket.”

Bishop’s many industry honors include: Northwood University’s 2008 Automotive Aftermarket Management Educational Award, AAIA’s 2010 Industry Advocate Award, Counterman Magazine’s 2010 “Top Ten Automotive Aftermarket Industry Influencers Award” and the Aftermarket Business News “Top 10 News Makers of the Year Award” in 2010 and 2013.

In 2009 Bishop was presented with AWDA’s “Pursuit of Excellence Award” and in 2013 was recognized with AWDA’s prestigious “Leader of the Year Award.”

“I've known Rusty for many, many years,” said Larry Pavey, president, Federated Auto Parts Distributors. “He's been a great supporter and mentor. It's very gratifying to see him recognized with this award.”
