– July 27, 2020 – Representatives from the Auto Care Association and its membership met with James Owens, deputy administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), on Friday, July 24, to discuss the data access referendum that will be included as “Question 1” on the ballot for Massachusetts voters this November. A vote in favor of Question 1 would give Massachusetts vehicle owners the ability to access their mechanical data and to provide authorization to share that data with their independent repair shops. The meeting focused on a July 20 letter the NHTSA sent to Massachusetts state legislators echoing the contention of the automakers that access to data by vehicle owners would create cyber security concerns.
– July 14, 2020 – The Massachusetts Right to Repair Committee turned in 24,000 signatures on Wednesday, July 1 to the Secretary of State regarding a ballot question that would mandate car companies provide car owners with control of repair data generated by their vehicles. The submission is more than the 13,374 signatures that are required by law to have a question placed on the ballot. While these signatures are usually collected manually, the COVID-19 virus forced the Committee to seek a consent decree from the Massachusetts Supreme Court that permitted the collection of signatures electronically.
